The Cleveland Cavaliers have made four new additions to their roster this off-season. After failed attempts to land Jimmy Butler and Paul George, the Cavs made some free agent signings to strengthen and upgrade the bench. Let’s take a look at the new additions and their possible impact for the 2017/2018 season.

Jeff Green – SF/PF
On July 12th the Cavaliers reached a one year $2.3 million dollar veteran’s minimum deal with free agent forward Jeff Green. After making $15 million with the Orlando Magic last season, Green prioritized winning over making big dollars in signing with Cleveland. The 30 year old averaged 9 points and 3 rebounds for Orlando last season. Green should provide a solid backup for Lebron James and give Cleveland some much needed scoring from the wing position off of the bench. He is also a decent defender and is able to defend on the wing and in the post. Green has a connection with Cavs head coach Ty Lue as they spent time together with the Celtics early in Green’s career when Lue was an assistant coach with the Celtics.

Derrick Rose – PG
The biggest and boldest acquisition to this point is former NBA rookie of the year and league MVP Derrick Rose. On July 25th Rose agreed to a one year $2.1 million dollar veteran’s minimum contract with Cleveland for the 2017/2018 season. Rose also prioritized winning over dollars. With the pending trade of Kyrie Irving, Rose will have a chance to start at point guard depending on what the Cavs get in return for Irving. While Rose may not be the high flier he used to be, he can still create off the dribble and get to the rim. Playing with an unselfish player like Lebron will benefit Rose and his playmaking abilities. Of course the big question is will Rose be able to stay healthy for a full season? The Cavs will have to limit his minutes and most likely give him some games off to help preserve him for the post season.

Jose Calderon – PG
On July 10th the Cavaliers announced the signing of 35 year old veteran point guard Jose Calderon to a one year $2.3 million dollar veteran’s minimum contract for the 2017/2018 season. Calderon averaged 3 points and 2 assists in 41 games with the Los Angeles Lakers and Atlanta Hawks. If Derrick Rose ends up starting after Kyrie Irving is dealt, Calderon could be competing with Kay Felder for the backup point guard spot. Calderon is still a good passer, but has lost a step and his shooting has been on a steady decline each season. If he ends up playing major minutes the Cavs could be in big trouble. The best role for Calderon would be as the third point guard and veteran locker room prescence.

Cedi Osman – SF
On July 18th Cleveland signed Turkish forward Cedi Osman to a three year $8.3 million dollar contract. The 22 year old Osman was a second round pick in 2015 who played in Europe for the past two seasons. The Cavs are paying $700,000 of Osman’s $1 million dollar buyout with his Turkish team. He averaged 7 points and 3 rebounds in the Euroleague last season while shooting 34% from three point range. Osman is a solid wing defender with a developing offensive game. He will not be expected to play major minutes next season as he learns the NBA game. Osman gives the Cavs a young player they can develop for the future. It is also possible that he could be included in a trade, possibly packaged with Kyrie Irving.
